LinkedIn Launches Group Discussions

linkedin discussionFor a long time, groups on LinkedIn have served very little purpose.

Today, LinkedIn finally added a few features that will make your LinkedIn group connections more powerful, including advanced search, but the most important of the features is Discussions. When we launched the Real Estate Shows group, this is the feature I was looking forward to the most, so I'm happy to finally be able to use it.

Check it out for yourself.

Interesting... I'm going to have to get back there and look more closely at the system.

Thanks for the post. I have been considering joining something like LinkedIn, or facebook, or myspace, just not sure where, what, & how.

I've had a Linkedin profile for a while now.  I will have to check out this new feature.

I am new to ActiveRain and am considering where else I should be.  So many social sites....so little time.   If you can't be everywhere, how to determine the best places to be?  I would love to hear what you think.

Facebook appears more prominently in my Inbox every day.  I had some trouble with LinkedIn back when I changed my email address and it set up two accounts for me when I tried to switch email addresses. But given your high regard for LinkedIn, I'll focus more on trying to manage it.

Posted by ARDELL DellaLoggia (Sound Realty) about 1 year ago

Ardell... for me, the real power of LinkedIn is not in who I am directly connected to, I can communicate with them in many ways. The power is in being able to see degrees of seperation from those I want or need to know at any given time for any given purpose. Example, I needed to contact the inventor of a patent two days ago. I had several options, including having someone I know introduce me to them. LinkedIn allows me to see HOW I am connected to them.

I need to work LinkedIn more.  I have gotten a bit of traction from FaceBook and can just jump in and out at will.  Linked in hasn't been worked much by me yet because I haven't really developed a strategy.

I haven't used linkedIn much, but I will now.  I've got a few connections, but need to work it better.

Have a great Labor Day weekend!

Jeff, here is a question from my ignorance and timidity - How do I balance this social networking & internet marketing with personal security? I used to tell my kids not to give out personal info over the net b/c you never really know who is on the other side.

Posted by Rick Trowe - Go With Trowe (Cerium Learning) about 1 year ago

Thanks for the heads-up Jeff.  I haven't done much with my LinkedIn so will check it out!

Jeff - I just joined the group but I think I have to wait for approval in order to view the discussions.   Seems like it will be a useful tool on LinkedIn.

I just gave a demonstration of linkedin which was then followed by my huge lengthy plug for AR. I had a banker ask me "so youre the tech guy? Whats new, where should we go?" I sent a link to this and to linkedin.

I don't know how you have time for all these social networks. I've had to pick and choose which ones in which I should participate. But then, I am a gamer. I guess those hours could be spent on more social networking, but I need my play time =)

I've always loved LinkedIn and now there's a better reason to like it, whoever was behind this was a genius!

I use LinkedIn because it's professional not water-cooler social. I set up a group for my former corporate career company. I wanted to email info to the group of now 110 but the rules forbid this. I was very excited when I saw the new addition to be able to communicate with the group. Earlier this week, I received an email from someone who I had not heard from since the late 70's. He found this group and made the connection.

Jeff - thanks for always being on the leading edge and sharing with all of us. I've been on LinkedIn for a while, but haven't maximized it - also have the problem of 2 e-mail addresses, so I can't respond properly.

Posted by Sharon Simms St Pete FL - CRS CIPS CLHMS RSPS (ALVA International, Inc.) about 1 year ago

Jeff,

Unlike Facebook, more fo the people who ask me to add them in LinkedIn are my clients.  So it would seem to be a more valuable tool.  It just doesn't draw me in via my email as much as Facebook does.  I'll have to be more proactive about it.   Facebook forces you to be reactive...well encourages via reaction requested.

I get lots more emails about Facebook than LinkedIn.  Is that true for you as well?

Posted by ARDELL DellaLoggia (Sound Realty) about 1 year ago

Jeff, thanks for the information I will have to check it out.  I have not used Linkedin to its full potential like I should.

Interesting. I checked in at Linkedin today and noticed that 2 groups I had joined had discussions going and I thought, "wow, this could translate from seeing who knows whom, to who takes the 1st steps to make this a very useful tool." I have to agree that the potential is unlimited.

I signed up for linked-in some time ago, but haven't really done much with it.  I will have to reconsider its value.  Thanks.

Linked in pretty slow moving in getting its subscribers to contact eachother, due to its selling the contacting feature, hopefully this new function brings like minded people together on linkedin.

Posted by James Engel KW Beverly Hills (Keller Williams Realty Beverly Hills) about 1 year ago

Ardell... yes the volume of emails I get from Facebook is higher, but a lot of those are application invitations and vampire bites and "Make a $Billion in Real Estate" offers. I've connected with more of my high school and college friends on facebook, so it's not a place I would abandon right now. It has been easier to engage in discussion on Facebook, but this release of features in the groups is a step in the right direction for LinkedIn.

Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) about 1 year ago

Patrick... I noticed the same thing. It was interesting to see which of the groups had NOT introduced discussions yet.

Elaine... I feel similarly about LinkedIn. It has a different personality. Distinctly professional.

Great news re LinkedIn.  Facebook is good exposure but getting irritating.

Posted by Susie Blackmon~Ocala~Horses~Horse Farms~Social Media for Horse Industry. about 1 year ago

Thanks for pointing that out.  I had joined a couple of groups and was very surprised that served no apparent purpose.  Hadn't noticed a discussion feature was added.   Thanks!  Now I'm logging off AR and onto LinkedIn.

Facebook is just a more mature version of msypace. Linkedin is much more professional in nature and can give a realtor true investment potential, something we often gamble with on networks outside of Active Rain. What you get more of when entering a network such as facebook is exposure. For reference, These stats show facebook has almost 5x the number of respondants and viewers on it's network compared to linkedin. Myspace, conversely has even more but it's on a downward trend. I still feel, linkedin is the premier professional social network which could rival facebook one day.

btw: Found something interesting, while typing this.  If you type in faecbook.com it takes you to google.com instead.  Smart move on google's part.

Thanks Jeff. I don't really DO anything on Linked In. I have viewed it just as a place to have a prominent online resume. But perhaps the groups element will change how I view it, or its usefulness to me.

William, thanks for stopping by. Yes, it's a nice addition. They need to give admins the ability to moderate the discussions, but it's a great first step.

Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) about 1 year ago

'Bout time, wouldn't you say?  For so long, LinkedIn groups served no other purpose than to assemble as many group badges on your profile.  Now they'll actually have some utility, allowing group members to interact directly, exchanging ideas and having meaningul discussions.

We don't need no stinking badges...
