There's Gold Outside Of The Real Estate Blogosphere

The Kingdom 2.0 BlogOnce in a while I'm reminded of the value of stepping outside of my usual reading circles.

Like most of us, I get into ruts. There are several dozen blogs that I read religiously and going to them has become more of a morning ritual than an awakening. I know what to expect from those blogs. They're comfortable and they deliver.

This morning, while reading Nicki Rothwell's Home Staging Blog, I randomly clicked on a face I didn't recognize in her MyBlogLog Reader Community Widget.  This took me to Jonathan G.

Jonathon has almost no content on his MyBlogLog page, but there is a link to his blog, The Kingdom 2.0. It's directed at pastors. Now, I'm obviously not a pastor, though in my early adult life at Grace College & Theological Seminary, I wanted to be one. So, the subject matter was of some interest to me and I liked the design. (That's key for me, by the way. I quickly navigate away from ugly sites.)

I perused through some of the content on the first page and quickly realized this was good, quality content. And because it was written for a different audience, I read it differently. I loved reason number 3 in his post Three Reasons To Use Google Docs As A Blog Editor and thought his "you're more creative than you thought" comment to pastors could have been written to anyone.

But the post that caused me to write this post was, 4 Easy Steps To Turn Sermons Into Blog Posts. I recommend you go read it for yourself, but here are the bullet points:

  • Cut The Fat
  • Stay On Topic
  • Inject Some Personality
  • Rewrite The Headline

Any blogger could benefit from keeping his suggestions in their brains when they're writing posts, not just Christian pastors. And here was the surprise for me. Jonathon Greene lists as part of his experience, "Tomato consultant." But I didn't recognize his face and didn't even know his full name until I started writing this post. And that serves to illustrate my point.

Sometimes You Need A Change Of Perspective

I  can say with almost complete certainty that I would have passed over a post on The Real Estate Tomato with a title, 4 Easy Steps To Turn Your Emails Into Blog Posts. Why? It's not because it wouldn't have been well written, it's because I've read hundreds of posts in the RE.net with similar titles. Stepping out of the technorati and real estate blog ring forced my brain out of it's morning rut. I read the content differently.

There's gold outside of the real estate blogosphere. And like those miners who came to California in 1849, to find it you're going to have to travel into some uncharted territory.

Jeff:

I agree too often we as agents/brokers, become yawns in the way we do things (it called habits). Also, your post points something out that I feel is worth commenting on and that is if you do not have a catchy title for your post it goes un-notice. Whats up with your statement on ugly blog's, is this a form of blogging discrimination?

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for the write up, man.  Really cool insights.

I used to be a Real Estate blogger once upon a time.  That is, of course, until a personal situation forced me out of the biz.  Thankfully, that same personal situation caused me to reconsider my faith and return to a relationship with the Lord.

I teach for the Real Estate Tomato, and and in cooperation with them to build Christian Blogs for churches and Pastors that meet the standard of excellence that we've come to expect from the Tomato.  I believe that the Lord is calling all Christians to embrace the new facets of technology to advance the Kingdom in a powerful way.

We're the church.  We're supposed to be the best at everything.

Thanks again for the write up.  Be blessed.

Monika... I spend a lot of time in the random, but even that can become a rut! :)

Lorraine and Loretta... yes, I discriminate. There, I said it.

Jonathan... it's really my pleasure. Obviously, I think your thoughts there are very well done. Much success to you!

I very much appreciate it when people like you share their links to great posts.  Twitter is the best for that, as well as posts like this!  I sometimes end up lost in outside readings, clicking from link to link and not knowing how to get back to the good ones.  :-)

Jeff, you never cease to amaze me! You constantly come up with new "stuff" to help us enlarge our knowledge and challenge me to think other ways. Great job. Love the tips by the way, ;-) Even though I may have heard lots and lots of tips, I need to be reminded.  There is so much "out there" that I don't think I'll ever get 'em all, but you help me weed through them by picking out the good stuff. Thanks Jeff.

This was a great find and I agree, pretty wins me over too.. OK, not pretty but a nice look. Great tips I have to learn to implement, great job as usual.

So you wanted to be a pastor in a former life? Well, we share that in common. Stepping out into the greater blogosphere is a rather daunting prospect for many, especially given the rather comforting confines of our platform. But as you so eloquently state, there is true gold to be found. Gold that stretches and challenges our thinking. Maureen Francis used to conduct Outside Blog Tours and they were wonderful. Perhaps we should start something similar. Kind of a blog tour chain letter?

Jonathan Greene!!!! How are you my friend? I think Churches are the perfect fit for blogging. I have actually been working on setting up a social network for my Church on ning.com. It's perfect for Sunday school classes and committees to be able to set up their own groups but still have every thing in one place. I wish you much success in your endeavor.

Jeff, I read everything and anything I can get my hands on. We can certainly get bogged down if we don't step outside of our professions and see what others are doing.

Jeff,

So true and that's why it's also important to get involved in communities Facebook, Twitter, MySpace.  You'll read something or find something you can parlay into real estate.

Before blogs the same was true with magazines and books.  You can learn a ton from other industries and one of your greatest marketing ideas might be inspired by a new twist on a success story from a player outside of your competition.  How great is that.

Thank you for sharing.

But gaining a new perspective is always great. Reading blogs actually have helped me conquering writer's blog because when I read I get inspired in different ways. (I feel my brain tingling hahaha)

Cheers,
