We will probably find out on November 5.
Yesterday, Google held a private meeting with 15 tech giants to discuss their plan to deal with Facebook.
The meeting was so secret that all attendees had to sign confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements strictly forbidding them from discussing what was shown to them at the meeting. Notwithstanding that NDA, I’ve now spoken with three of the attendees off record to get an understanding of what Google is planning. Google’s goal - to fight Facebook by being even more open than the Facebook Platform. If Facebook is 98% open, Google wants to be 100%.
This should be very, very interesting. Why?
You don't have to read much further to find out. Google appears to have some very large plans. Right now those only include a few of their applications, but speculation around the web is that this is an overarching strategy that will impact every aspect of what Google does.

whatever
I don't see how they are competition
That's like GM deciding to use more grease than Cracker Barrel
Hhhmm, sounds interesting and I don't even know what "facebook" is? I guess I will just have to wait to find out.

A real social network is a community and users don't change communities at the drop of a hat. What I find more interesting is being able to bridge these communities instead of worrying about the 1% of users who hop from community to community like crack addled humming birds skipping from flower to flower.
I copied this sentence off a post on social networks and I think it is true. IGoogle is getting more popular by the day. I'm surprised Google just doesn't buy Facebook and call it a day. I'll hold out my opinion to see how it unfolds, I can see some good in not hopping from flower to flower but ......................
Anyway I use by IGoogle more each day, did you know you can now bring in all realtor dot come listings in for your area ? slide shows, list and listing details ? I've been following it for about a week. Interesting, I can see buyer who know where they want to move using this app ?
I guess I need to learn more about how to use my IGoogle webpage. I have thought of it as nothing more than to quickly give me the weather everyday so I know what to wear to work, and to quickly get a dictionary when writing a post. I guess there's more to it than that.
Jeff, thanks for continuing to educate us.
All... I don't have a clue what this means. I wasn't one of the 15 invited. Reading through Brad Fitzpatricks, Thoughts On Social Graphs, you get a sense for where he and others may want to take this. It's long, but it's not a technically difficult article to read. It's more conceptual than technical. I found it fascinating, personally.
David... whatever? :) Google surely doesn't feel Facebook is a competitor, but the rush of developers running to build Facebook apps certainly did not escape their attention. The last thing Google wants is for Facebook to become the central repository for web applications. They want that spot. Opening up their entire platform and providing a tie to information from within and without would certainly provide incentives for developers who don't want to be locked into any single platform.
Chris... of all the Social Networking sites, I like Facebook the best. It just "feels" right. The apps being built for it are, right now, mostly for fun, games, etc... but that won't be true for long.
Missy... I don't see any value in jumping from network to network either. Right now AR and Facebook are my true network focus. Everything I else join is for learning purposes. For example, I updated my Digg profile and invited a few people, but mostly to see how it works. Find out why it might be beneficial, etc.
Rondel... non-disclosures are notoriously weak. Personally, I don't need them and I don't break them. However, they weren't telling ME, they were telling Michael Arrington at TechCrunch. As for authenticity, one person saying it might be suspect. Three people from three different companies... that's more than just a rumor. TechCrunch has a good reputation for accurate reporting.
Fran... thanks, but in this case, I'm not really educating. I just wanted everyone to see what might be coming. It may not have any interest to most, but it may. The part of the article that really got me thinking was the paper written by Brad Fitzpatrick.
Jeff -good stuff --I was unaware of iGoogle unti now. I think Google is the Madison Avenue of the internet.
What do you think of Linkedin?
Geez! !
You're working me to death.
Lenn... :) I highly doubt that!
Bryant... or they'll just buy them.
Jeff,
I guess you can say they are or will be cornering the market.
I think I am at the point of exhaustion from joining groups, networks, social sites and blabbidy blah's. The list is never ending and now they're just ticking me off.
::hand to the forehead:: I vant to be left alone.
Neal... they're going to try, that's for sure.
Chris... yes.
Gita... somewhat, without question.
Chris... :)
Chris... (I wonder how many Chris' we have on AR?) True and they already have.
Sam... me as well. You and Survivor China are enticing me to read that again.
I'm sure google has a few new and innovative tools that none of are expecting. I guess we'll all find out soon enough. Keep doing what you do.
