A Photo Widget For Mac Users Only

If you don't own a Mac, you can stop reading.
You can't use what I'm about to describe.

OK, now that all the PC folks are gone, us Mac lovers can chat a bit.

I found a great little trick today on the Realmac Software support pages. The trick was written for use in RapidWeaver, but it will work as a widget just about anywhere, including the sidebar here on ActiveRain. If you look at the sidebar on the right you're going to see a photo widget named "ActiveRain Photos." Does it look familiar? If you've ever embedded an iPhoto Web Gallery into an iWeb page it will. This is the Web Gallery widget they use as icons for the galleries you place.

The cool thing about iPhoto Web galleries is that when you add or delete a photo to them in iPhoto it adds or removes it from your gallery online when you tell it to. It's basically an RSS Feed. So, now I've got an ActiveRain Photos Widget that I can update without ever leaving iPhoto. I like that.

So, with special thanks to Gunter at Realmac Software, here is how you get it here on ActiveRain.

  1. widget1_markup.htmlIn iPhoto, create a new web gallery, name it and drag some photos into it.
  2. Create a new, empty iWeb page.
  3. Click on Web-Widgets and select your web gallery.
  4. Publish.
  5. Go to iDisk > Web > Sites > Site > Blank_files.
  6. Open the resulting "widget_markup.html" files in a text editor
  7. Select and copy the <script>.....</script> section and paste it into a new document.
  8. Edit each place you see the Width="160" height="140" to width 215 and height 188. This occurs in four places.
  9. Copy the edited text.
  10. Go to your AcitveRain account and paste the code in My Settings > Blog Description (place the code in the order you want it to appear in the sidebar on the right)
  11. Update and go enjoy your new widget.

As you can see on the right, at 215px wide and 188 pixels high, the widget looks great in the AR sidebar. Move your mouse over the images and watch what happens. You can even set the web gallery up so you can email photos to it or allow others to upload photos.

Here is what the code should look like before you embed.

I'm still not buying a Mac

Posted by Loren Nason (Your Local Tech) over 4 years ago

I read it anyway Jeff, I figure that my next purchase will be the Mac and the last one should have been had I followed our discussion. Not reading a post that Don't read this is like telling someone not to think of a Blue Horse. You know that beautiful white horse that has a blue tint on it. You can't not think about that beautiful blue horse even if I told you to STOP, thinking about it. So, One more lesson lesson I learned about my next title.

Many thanks for all your help and Steve was great to fix the code. I did the post we discussed on Viral Marketing so be sure to check it out. I hope it gets featured because then a lot more people will see it and you might get some new clients.

What happened to no blogging on Sundays?  How can you drop a bomb like this on a Sunday?  I will try it tomorrow, I'll let you know how it goes.  Thanks for the tip - it looks great!

Jeff - have you ever tried making a website with iWeb?

Jeff - will have to try it.  Have you gone to the new version of iWork/iLife 2008?

Okey dokey, Jeff. Now I have to wade through the massive mess I made with i-photo. I think it weighs 8 pounds or so....

Perhaps this will motivate me to clean it up. Am still learning the MAC :-P

Loren... :) You're a grown man, you get to make bad decisions if you choose.

William... i figured I'd save everyone time and let them know right up from that this was not going to apply to 90% of them.

Maureen... I didn't even turn my computers on yesterday. I posted this at 10:28 PM PST. AR's server is set to Central time. :)  And, yes, I have used iWeb to create pages... it's very simple.

Aziz... yes, I made the switch the first day possible. The new features in iPhoto make it worth it, for me. And iWork 08 has just simplified my life another level. I am now completely done with Microsoft Office with the inclusion of Numbers. Numbers is truly unique in how it approaches the spreadsheet. It's not an Excel clone.

Roberta... How did you make a mess with iPhoto? My bet is that you don't have "View By Roll" turned on. That will clean it up pretty quickly. Also, a few "smart folders" will assist as well.

Ana... :)

Jeff,

I have a Mac, but that's about where my expertize ends. All this code and iWeb... I want to be like you guys, but at 12 am it's way to late for it now.

Faina... :)  This is definitely what would be considered a "hack." This widget was not meant for this use, but it sure works.

I think instead of 'Toolman' they'll have to start calling you 'Widgety Wabbit'. That sounds more Mac-like to me. :)  (Lifelong PC owner here ... ducking for the reply comment).

So Jeff,

I'm not clear on it yet, .mac has never caught me as a good deal. Do I need to have a .mac account to use this, or can I host it someplace else? I am still behind on getting ilife8 also, but that looks very cool. I love 7

As always great job.

Michael, you wouldn't need to have .mac to do this. You could save to a folder and upload to your own server if you wanted to do it. I've always been a .mac user, so I don't really question it. Is it more expensive than other similar services? Yes. The storage capacity just went to 10 Gig, though, so it's utility improved quiet a bit in that regard.

Now that I have a mac all your blogs are a must for me.

iWeb is one of the most amazingly (if thats a word) user-friendly computer applications on the market. To this day, I still cannot believe the volumes of Windows based computer systems still sell over Mac's.  iWeb is just the beginning!  Has anyone tried Pages from the iWork apps?  Anyone in real estate who has constructed his/her own website and updates it themselves should be a Macintosh user.

Only Mac drawback in real estate -- Top Producer is not compatible...

Jeff,

Does this little widget tutorial above require iPhoto 8. Any way to do it with iLife '07?

Jeff - I haven't done this yet but I am going to give it a try.

Hi Jeff! I am a relatively new mac user, left the pc world forever -- woohoo! But, my problem is finding the time to learn about and take advantage of the features and functions that a mac offers. I find myself resorting to figuring out how to do what I used to do on my pc, rather than delving into the wealth of new benefits that I know are out there waiting for me. Joining this group, and learning from the posts is encouraging me to get more mac savvy. But, I think I need some more elementary help -- ok, maybe not elementary, but middle-school definitely. Any suggestions for how to learn more basics so that I can begin understanding and taking advantage of these advanced functions you and others use so successfully? Thanks so much for any advice!

Dawn.... well, that's a tough question to answer. I don't really know what your skill level is or what things you already know. I also don't know what you might consider advanced functions. So, my first question is this: Do you have an Apple Store near you?
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) almost 4 years ago
Wow -- that was a fast response! I would have said that I was advanced pc user, if that helps. And, yes, there's an Apple Store at my local mall.
Posted by Dawn Grasty - Durham NC Real Estate (Prudential YSU Realty) almost 4 years ago

Dawn, this kind of stuff is best done in a very interactive environment. My advice is for you to sign up for some of the free classes they offer at the Apple Store. The ones you will probably want are in the Workshops section. Here is a link, and they should offer these at each store.
