An Interactive Blog Post - TokBox

Anyone Who Happens By In the Next Few Minutes Is Likely To Be A Part Of This

tokbox logoThis post is going to be written in pieces and posted every few minutes as I go along. Just scroll down a bit to the TokBox window in the sidebar. You should see me in my office, typing away. You should be able to hear me as well. Anyone who come by at this point will. So don't be afraid to hit the "Push To Talk" button. But know this, everyone will be able to hear what you say. :)

I have been testing RSS Feeds and haven't gotten to my own feed reader, so I missed the TechCrunch post about TokBox. So last night, while testing the feeds at Facebook, I noticed Joel Burslem had put up a link to his TokBox. I left him a video message, but he wasn't up last night after midnight. So, I emailed Loren Nason and Steve Zehngut. If you had been on this blog last night between 12:15am and 1:00am, you would have seen some interesting reality TV. :)

Ardell was the first to stop by. We're talking right now. She has some interesting ideas. I'll post a video of the chat in a minute. (Sorry, the sound didn't capture, so no video) Ines is on now. And Rick too! Now, that was fun.

But is it a business tool? Sure, but probably not live on your blog.

Someone is trying to get on voice only right now, probably to tell me to shut up. OK, I'm about to shut off the live version of this, edit the video and come back to add it to this post. (Well, that didn't happen.)

One of the software engineers from TokBox, Ron, just came by and I hope I am able to capture the video. Yep, here is our conversation. Ron joins in about 90 seconds into the video.

Marc Vitorillo just stopped by with a video camera as well. Thanks, Marc. I'm going to post our video chat here as well, so people can see some of the echo problems that people are talking about in the comments. He also sent me this after we were done. Marc's video email.

And perhaps the funniest moment of the live testing was David Podgursky, using Internet video to communicate with Post-it Notes! :) Hilarious.

It illustrates very well why this is still in beta. I think this may have some interesting potential applications. Marc Vitorillo mentioned GotVideo.tv and wrote about it last week here on Active Rain.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

EDIT: David attempted to leave me a video message, but the sound still didn't come through. It does give me the chance to show you that you can embed the video messages. However, it appears their embed code does not work here on AR.

I have a microphone and tried to see if I could go on at the same time as you and Ardell....but didn't happen.  Ardell had major echo
Posted by Rick & Ines - Miami Beach Real Estate (Majestic Properties) over 2 years ago
Jeff, always great to see you using cool technology. Check your email...I just sent you a video email.
Posted by Schaaf & Vitorillo Realty over 2 years ago
doesn't it feel like "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU?"
Posted by Rick & Ines - Miami Beach Real Estate (Majestic Properties) over 2 years ago

It does feel like big brother is watching me.

Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago

Ines... i figured only one at a time.

If you're watching and have a video cam on your computer, hit push to talk.

Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
Marc... thanks.
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago

Jeff, this is too cool. I wish I had a mic or headset so I could particpate. Have fun with it.

Ciao!

Posted by Jennifer Wilson - Agent Solutions (Agent Solutions) over 2 years ago

Jeff,

Very cool! -- Is there anyway to have the actual conversations automatically posted to a blog? (With edit features obviously!)

I have a mic, but no camero but I'm listening.....................weird.
Posted by Missy Caulk-Ann Arbor- Realtor(R)- Ann Arbor Real Estate (Keller Williams-Ann Arbor) over 2 years ago

Jennifer... thanks!

Paul... you can get embed code from their site if you record a video email, but not these live things.

Missy... yes, weird is the right word.

I heard a major echo as well.  Cool though.  What will you show us next?
Posted by Steve Scheer - Denver Real Estate - Highlands Ranch Real Estate (Denver Realty Partners - Metro Brokers) over 2 years ago
For some unknown reason, my screen capture program did NOT pick up the sound when Ardel and Ines were online with me. Too bad, Ardell's comments were great. Not that Ines wasn't. :)
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago

Steve... i'm not going to show you anything next. I'm about to turn this thing off.

You got a mic? Hit "push to talk."

Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
Jeff- thats really cool I need to get a mic. Sorry I can't talk to you but I can see you.
Posted by Robert Schwabe - Orange Park FL Real Estate (Keller Williams- First Coast Realty) over 2 years ago
I never saw a Push to Talk button.  Maybe it doesn't show if someone else is already talking to you.  I need to log off now anyway.
Posted by Steve Scheer - Denver Real Estate - Highlands Ranch Real Estate (Denver Realty Partners - Metro Brokers) over 2 years ago
Robert, the last few people to try and connect with just a mic have not had much luck... so you're not missing anything.
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago

I think it is interesting

and probably more interactive than Meebo or something else like that

I can see it could be a little controversial on myspace for those that aren't as... innocent

Posted by Boca Raton & Lake Worth Florida Real Estate Broker over 2 years ago

The audio is still cutting in and out.  I'll try it on a different computer.

People may just be hitting the buttons who don't have Mike's.  Big, big echo on Ron talking now.  That's probably what Ines was talking about.  You obviously are not picking up the echo, but we are.  We can't understand what Ron is saying because of the echo.

Posted by ARDELL DellaLoggia (Sound Realty) over 2 years ago
I can hear you loud and clear, but Ron has about 4 layers of echo going on.  So much that you can't tell what he is saying.
Posted by ARDELL DellaLoggia (Sound Realty) over 2 years ago
I can't understand anything he is saying either.  Jeff, you seem to be the only one I can hear without an echo.
Posted by Steve Scheer - Denver Real Estate - Highlands Ranch Real Estate (Denver Realty Partners - Metro Brokers) over 2 years ago

Jeff- Good thing this is beta there is so much echoing going on. Once they work out the bugs I really think this is going to be a great idea.

Posted by Robert Schwabe - Orange Park FL Real Estate (Keller Williams- First Coast Realty) over 2 years ago
In the videos I'm going to post, you will all be able to hear what I'm hearing. If you're using this outside of a sidebar embed, it won't matter, since it will just be the two of you speaking.
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
Hey Ardell. The audio has been cutting in and out for me as well.
Posted by Jennifer Wilson - Agent Solutions (Agent Solutions) over 2 years ago
I am still watching on & off too - I can't hear you as well anymore - audio has been cutting in & out.  I just saw the guy with the note, and I can't hear anything right now either.
Posted by Steve Scheer - Denver Real Estate - Highlands Ranch Real Estate (Denver Realty Partners - Metro Brokers) over 2 years ago

That was the funniest thing...seeing Jeff interact with David with "live chat" via Post-it Notes...  :)

If you want the digital age now instead of the future....check out http://gotvideo.tv

Sorry Jeff...didn't mean to advertise on your post...but it is very related and on target.  Great talking to you earlier via TokBox.

Posted by Schaaf & Vitorillo Realty over 2 years ago
Jeff, how cool was that! Post it notes was too funny! Don't think that was intended LOL!
Posted by Lysa Napolitano, Call Coordinator ~ Century 21 Sundance (Century 21 Sundance) over 2 years ago

Marc... write a post about gotvideo.tv and put the link here, if you don't mind!

Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago

that is why this needs a chat window!!

I'm out of post its... TokBox send me some post its!!

Posted by Boca Raton & Lake Worth Florida Real Estate Broker over 2 years ago

JT - might help if you ran a messenger chat with whoever is on while you're on video since sound kept cutting out

also... video was very pixelated from your end.

Posted by Boca Raton & Lake Worth Florida Real Estate Broker over 2 years ago

"Marc... write a post about gotvideo.tv and put the link here, if you don't mind!"

Thanks, Jeff.  I recently wrote about it last week here on Active Rain.

Posted by Schaaf & Vitorillo Realty over 2 years ago

weird interaction to note...

since I installed my webcam and did get on video with you... Yahoo Messenger keeps jumping up in my window!

VERY BIG PAIN IN THE BUTT

It is like they are related programs or something

David... I'm hoping Ron from TokBox will come back, or someone from TokBox and comment here on the issues we saw.
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
Marc...sorry I missed that post. I put it in the body of this post.
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago

>Jeff, how cool was that! Post it notes was too funny! Don't think that was intended LOL!

Lisa, not that was not intended, but it was hilarious. :)

Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago

Thanks for the entertainment Jeff. The post it note video was hilarious!

Thanks for the info too. I have a website to keep our friends and family updated on how we're doing since we emigrated to Canada (from The Netherlands). It would be great to have this on the website.

Jeff - this is a great post, you are a fantastic pioneer to get these things out there and working to boot!  I had difficulty as you know with your audio coming through, and there was an echo slapping back from my voice on your speakers.  Little kinks will be refined, and I see this as a great tool, but it will still have to compete with the others like you pointed out.  I video chat with my son in college but we use AIM and Yahoo messenger which works for the most part. I'll have to look into this one and see if it's better for us both. He uses a Mac on his end, so we'll give it a shot and I'll let you know. Thanks Jeff, great job and you're very much appreciated!  B-)
Posted by Brad Andersohn ~ Community Manager (ActiveRain) over 2 years ago
Brad... well it was great to hear your voice reagardless. I use iChat for most of my video conferences, since most of us here at Real Estate Shows use Macs. This won't surprise you, but it rocks hard. Full screen play, etc. Skype works very well however. I've done a couple of video chats with Teresa Boardman and they have had great quality as well.
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
Very interesting I get the impression from hearing Ron that anyone can use this no software needed But is a download required by the user. and I liked his comment about google alerts I am going to have to look into that one.

Kathy, there is now software to download. It is running on Flash Media Server. Flash is the most ubiquitous plugin in the world, 98% of users already have it installed.

FYI... this post is already on the first page of Google for a search on TokBox.

Jeff, this is so ultra cool!

I shared this with a friend of mine and she wanted to know if you're using a webcam.  I assumed you were, is that correct?

I think I have to get this.  Definitely cool to set up for a weekly live Q&A session.

Hmmm... first I have to get the webcam...  Got any tips on this??  Or any other pieces we might need to best utilize this.  I can definitely see how it can be used; perhaps not daily, but in other ways for sure.

Oh and if you have any tips for the webcam, I'm pc, not mac, if it makes a difference.

Posted by Nickie Rothwell (Get Staged 2 Sell) over 2 years ago
Nickie... we can talk about it next week. Are you joining us?
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
Nickie... on second thought, here is my suggestion for a webcam for your PC. Buy a Mac laptop or iMac. Then sell your PC to someone you don't like and use the cam built into the Mac. You'll thank me for that later. :)
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
that was absolutely hilarious with David!  PS Can't wait till I buy my new Mac laptop and have the built in camera!

Jeff-

Wish I had a camera.....um then again at this hour, maybe not (yes, I am vain). -Still think its great!  Can't wait for all internet video quality to improve I know its just a matter of time.  Pretty soon they will have voice to text along with the video.... they probably already have that?

Jeff,

I had a good laughing fit this morning watching you and David.  My husband was giving me the quizzical look.  LOL  Does this mean I have to fix myself up before blogging?

Input:  There was prominent echo when Marc Vittorio was talking, your audio was good with small noticeable echo.

BTW thanks for the comedy minutes.

Very interesting, I am going to try to set this up, this will be great to see others that we have been writing to for so long.

Well Jeff, since I've just about filled up both drives of this baby, maybe you're right; time to move on and why not a Mac?

The only thing is, I've got the keyboard custom fitted to my fingertips now.  No one else can figure out how to type on it since the ink is gone whereas my fingers just fit right in to place...

Hope to see you next week.  Got a project on that day and my daughter's due date is the same day!  It is going to be an action packed week!

Thanks for all the cool tips, you keep us on our toes!

And we love the smiles too...

lol post it's...oh god I laughed till I hurt.

THANKS!

This was in interesting experiment. I think I would not put this live on a blog, however. I would link to it and announce time when I was available to chat via video. That seems more appropriate to me.
Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
Hi Jeff! I think this is great! I'm going to tell my daughter about this because she has friends out side of the country and is always trying to find new and free ways to talk to them outside of email and instant messaging. :)

Posted by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows) over 2 years ago
Jeff - the future is definitely here...how fun. Now what you need to do is have your office staged for your TokBox so you don't have that funny little pointy thing on your head...I actually clicked on your sample to see what has happened to your hair. :0  How about a nice organic painting of Laguna Beach behind you there...

Jeff - Thanks again for this post. Yesterday I put TokBox on our website. We keep in touch with family back in Holland through the internet. Not everyone has MSN or Skype and not everyone knows how to use them. You can't get easier than TokBox for those who can only check e-mail and look at the web! I couldn't believe how easy it was to set up too! I had my first chat yesterday evening with a friend of mine in California. Worked great! Love it! Thanks again!

I just video chatted on it.  There are probably a lot of features I don't know about it and will wait for you to explore and tell me what I need to do with them :)
